How to Embrace Simple Daily Spiritual Practices / ADHD, Holy Spirit, and Me, Spiritual Growth / By Coach Kenya Joy Building a meaningful relationship with God is a journey that begins with simple, daily spiritual habits. It involves prayer, worship, and the diligent study of His Word. Imagine a life where you can connect with God intimately, hear His voice, and follow His guidance. This journey may seem daunting, but, like any relationship, it starts with small, intentional steps and grows over time. As we embark on this path to a deeper connection with our Heavenly Father, remember the words of James 4:8 (NLT), which says, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” It’s important to remember that spiritual growth is not a one-size-fits-all journey. It’s unique to each person, and what works for one may not work for another. However, there are some accessible and effective spiritual practices that can help guide you on your way. What are the Easiest and Most Accessible Spiritual Practices? Prayer: One of the simplest and most accessible spiritual practices is prayer. Prayer is your direct line of communication with God. It’s a conversation where you can pour out your heart, share your joys and concerns, and seek His guidance. Just like my grandmother, who spent dedicated time in prayer every day, you can start small. Find a quiet space, set aside a few minutes each day, and talk to God from your heart. Worship: Worship is another powerful way to connect with God. It can be as simple as singing a worship song or meditating on His greatness. You don’t need a grand church service; you can worship right where you are. It’s about acknowledging God’s presence and expressing your love and gratitude. Studying His Word: The Bible is a treasure trove of wisdom and spiritual guidance. Reading and studying the Bible daily can help you understand God’s character, His promises, and His will for your life. Start with a short passage or a daily devotional to ease into this practice. How Do You Embrace Spirituality? Embracing spirituality means making God a central part of your life. It’s about inviting Him into your daily routine and seeking His presence in everything you do. My grandmother, a remarkable example of this, intentionally carved out time in her day to connect with God. She did so consistently, engaging in heartfelt conversations with Him, learning to hear His voice, and following His guidance. Did her deep relationship with God happen overnight? Absolutely not. Like any meaningful relationship, it took time and effort. But her journey serves as an inspiration, showing us that we can activate our prayer life and build a relationship with God, starting small and allowing it to develop and grow over time. What are Some Good Spiritual Practices? In addition to prayer, worship, and studying the Bible, here are a few more spiritual practices to consider: Fasting: Fasting involves abstaining from food or certain activities for a set period. It’s a way to seek God’s guidance, deepen your spiritual connection, and develop self-discipline. As Matthew 6:16-18 (NLT) reminds us, “When you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do… But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private.” Community: Joining a faith community or small group can provide support and accountability in your spiritual journey. You can learn from others, share your experiences, and grow together in faith. As Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT) encourages, “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another.” Service: Serving others is a powerful way to live out your faith. Acts of kindness and service can be a form of worship and a means to show God’s love to the world. In Galatians 5:13 (NLT), we’re reminded, “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Gratitude: Cultivating a thankful heart can enhance your spiritual life. Take time each day to reflect on your blessings and express gratitude to God. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT) advises, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” How Do I Start Spiritual Practices? Starting spiritual practices is about making a conscious decision to prioritize your relationship with God. It begins with a simple commitment to set aside time each day for prayer, worship, and studying His Word. Start small, and as you grow more comfortable, you can gradually increase the time and complexity of your spiritual habits. What Are the Four Spiritual Practices? While there are numerous spiritual practices to explore, the foundation often rests on four pillars: Prayer, Worship, Bible Study, and Community. These practices create a strong framework for building and nurturing your relationship with God.
