This month, my primary focus is on activating and nurturing my relationship with God, and I’d like to share that journey with you. It’s essential for me to convey that having ADHD should not deter anyone from forging a daily connection with God. I recognize that the symptoms of ADHD can, at times, pose challenges when it comes to maintaining focus and consistency.
Understanding the Importance of Daily Connection:
Building a daily connection with God is not just a religious ritual; it’s a path to spiritual growth and a source of strength in our daily lives. Scripture reminds us in James 4:8 (NLT) that drawing near to God results in Him drawing near to us, and this intimate connection can provide us with guidance, peace, and a sense of purpose.
Overcoming Challenges with ADHD:
Discovering that I had ADHD was a pivotal moment in my life, as it answered numerous questions and shed light on why certain aspects of my spiritual journey had been challenging. However, I am grateful for the path I’ve taken in learning to be consistent in prayer and in building an intimate relationship with God. The key for me has been taking it one day at a time.
Practical Steps to Building a Daily Connection with God:
- Set a Daily Appointment with God: Just as you would schedule important meetings, set aside a specific time each day for your spiritual connection. Consistency is key, and it helps train your mind and spirit.
- Start with Prayer: Begin your daily practice with a heartfelt prayer. Express your thoughts, feelings, and concerns to God. You can also start with pre-written prayers. Remember, He is always ready to listen.
- Dive into Scripture: Choose a passage from the Bible and meditate on it. You can start with short verses or passages that resonate with you. Reflect on their meaning and how they apply to your life.
- Practice Mindfulness: Given the challenges of ADHD, incorporating mindfulness techniques can be beneficial. Focus on your breathing, the present moment, and God’s presence with you.
- Utilize Devotional Resources: There are many devotionals and Christian resources designed for daily use. These can provide structure and guidance in your spiritual journey.
Embracing Grace and Progress:
Remember, building a daily connection with God is a journey, not a destination. Some days may be more challenging than others, especially if you have ADHD. Be gentle with yourself and understand that God’s love and grace are unconditional. Progress, no matter how small, is still progress.
Building a daily connection with God is a transformative journey that’s open to everyone, including those of us with ADHD. By setting aside time, incorporating prayer and scripture, and embracing grace, you can nurture your relationship with God one day at a time. Trust that God is with you on this journey, offering His love and guidance.
