Prayer Anchors: Creating Visual and Mental Cues to Stay on Track Leave a Comment / Consistency, Prayer, Spiritual Growth / By Coach Kenya Joy If you’ve ever felt the sting of guilt after forgetting your prayer time or losing focus during it, you’re not alone. As a Christian woman with ADHD, I know how challenging it can be to stay committed to daily prayer. It’s not about laziness or lack of commitment—it’s the endless sea of thoughts that makes it challenging to stay on task. But there’s good news: you can create simple systems to keep yourself on track. I call these systems prayer anchors. Last week, we talked about finding time to pray in the midst of a busy day. This week, we’re diving into using prayer anchors to maintain focus and consistency in your prayer journey. What Are Prayer Anchors? Prayer anchors are visual or mental cues designed to help you remember and stay committed to prayer. They are especially helpful for women with ADHD because they provide structure without inflexibility and create a tangible connection to your spiritual goals. Prayer anchors serve as reminders that pull you back to what matters most—spending time with God. Proverbs 3:6 (NLT) says, “Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Anchors help us do just that—seek Him amidst the chaos and distractions of life. How to Create Prayer Anchors Let me share some practical ways to set up these anchors so you can stay on track: Place Sticky Notes with Scriptures or Reminders Write down your favorite scriptures or short prayer reminders and place them where you’re likely to see them throughout the day. For example: Stick a note on your bathroom mirror that says, “Start your day with God.” Place a scripture like Deuteronomy 6:9 (NLT), “Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,” on your front door or refrigerator. Keep a note on your desk with a reminder to pause and pray during your workday. These visual prompts gently guide your mind back to prayer. Use Visual Anchors Set aside specific items or spaces that signal it’s time to pray. At the beginning of my prayer journey, I created a cozy prayer space on my living room couch. Every morning at 4 am, I’d sit in the same spot with my Bible and prayer journal on the nearby table. I even had a special blanket for those chilly mornings. You could use: A candle that you light only during prayer time. A specific chair or corner of a room designated for prayer. A beautifully bound journal where you record your prayers. These anchors make your prayer time feel intentional and special. Establish Mental Cues Pair your prayer time with a routine activity to create a mental connection. For example: Pray while sipping your morning coffee. Use your commute to work as a time to listen to worship music and pray. End your day with a gratitude prayer as you settle into bed. These mental cues tie prayer to something you already do, making it easier to stay consistent. My Personal Experience with Prayer Anchors When I started my prayer journey, I knew I needed structure. My ADHD made it hard to remember my commitments, let alone follow through. So, I set an alarm for 4 am that played my two-year-old daughter’s voice saying, “It’s time to command the morning!” This was my mental cue to wake up and start my prayer time. By combining that alarm with a designated prayer space and my Bible and journal at arm’s length, I created a routine that worked for me. These anchors helped me not only stay consistent but also deepen my connection with God. Encouragement for Your Prayer Journey If you’ve struggled to stay consistent with prayer, take heart. God doesn’t measure your worth by how perfectly you stick to a schedule. He simply delights in spending time with you. Using prayer anchors isn’t about perfection; it’s about creating reminders that gently pull you back to His presence.
