“I feel far from God. It’s been so long since I prayed, I don’t know how to start again.”
Does this sound familiar?
I know what it’s like to feel disconnected—far from God. Your prayer life feels almost non-existent, and your busy, beautiful, but brain-overloaded life makes it hard to stay consistent. You want to feel close to God again. You want to reconnect. But the longer it’s been, the more awkward it feels. You’re not alone.
As a Christian woman with ADHD, I’ve been there too. I wanted to do the things I believed made me a “good Christian.” I wanted a deep relationship with God, but inconsistency created distance… and then guilt crept in, making it even harder to start again. I’d think, “What do I even say? Is God disappointed in me?”
Here’s the truth: You don’t need to come back perfect. You just need to come back.
ADHD and Spiritual Disconnection
Living with ADHD can already feel like a mental juggling act. Add spiritual disconnection, and things can feel even heavier. Here’s how that disconnection might show up in your life:
💔 Emotionally:
- Guilt and shame – “I should be doing better,” “God must be disappointed in me.”
- Loneliness – Feeling like you’re carrying life all by yourself.
- Spiritual insecurity – Wondering if God still hears you… or loves you the same.
- Overwhelm – Feeling buried under life and unable to catch a breath.
- Hopelessness – Thinking you’ll never get back to where you once were.
🧠 Mentally:
- Overthinking – “How do I start again?” “What if I mess up?”
- Distraction overload – Sitting down to pray and your brain goes in ten different directions.
- Mental fatigue – Feeling too cluttered to even think clearly, let alone pray.
- Forgetfulness – You want to pray, but you keep forgetting.
🙏 Spiritually:
- Feeling distant from God – Like His voice is quiet or gone.
- Doubt – “Is my faith even real anymore?”
- Difficulty reading the Bible – You try, but it doesn’t connect.
- Lack of motivation – You want to care again but are stuck.
💡 Behaviorally:
- Avoidance – Pushing off prayer because it feels awkward.
- Inconsistency – You start one day, forget the next, and then spiral.
- Self-isolation – Skipping church or Bible study because you feel like you’re “behind.”
- Performing – Smiling on the outside, struggling on the inside.
🌀 Physically:
- Restlessness – You can’t settle, even in still moments.
- Sleep problems – Spiritual unrest or racing thoughts keeping you up.
- Fatigue – It’s exhausting carrying this weight alone.
- Stress symptoms – Headaches, stomachaches, and tension from spiritual burnout.
So, How Do You Start Praying Again?
Let’s start with this truth from Romans 8:1 (NLT):
“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”
Take a breath, sis. That heavy guilt you’re carrying? God isn’t holding it over your head. He’s not shaking His head in disappointment. He’s lovingly inviting you back with open arms.
There’s no condemnation here—just grace. You’re His daughter. He created you. He understands the distractions, brain fog, and intentions that get lost in the day’s chaos. He sees your heart, not your performance.
And the beautiful news? He’s ready to reconnect right now.
Three Grace-Filled Steps to Start Again
- Let Go of Guilt
God doesn’t need you to feel bad to come back. He wants your heart, not your shame. If you belong to Christ Jesus, you’re already covered in grace.
- Start Small
You don’t need to pray for 30 minutes. You don’t need a perfect journal setup. Just talk to God. Start with five minutes. Even two. Whisper a prayer while brushing your teeth. Speak to Him in the car. Prayer isn’t about performance—it’s about connection.
“Come close to God, and God will come close to you…” – James 4:8 (NLT)
That’s it. Just come close. Even if you feel clumsy or inconsistent, He meets you there.
- Use Tools That Work for Your Brain
As a woman with ADHD, traditional routines might not stick. That’s okay! You don’t have to do it the “normal” way. You just need a way that works for you. That’s why I created something simple and helpful just for us…
