Relationship Reset – Post 4
Have you ever said, “I can’t keep a routine no matter how hard I try?”
Same, sis. And if you’re anything like me, a Jesus-loving woman with ADHD, you’ve probably felt guilty more than once for not “sticking with it.”
For a long time, I thought connecting with God meant two-hour Bible studies, long-winded prayers, and a color-coded journal filled with deep reflections and Greek word studies. That was the standard I grew up seeing. As a preacher’s kid, I watched the saints pray for what felt like forever. They’d talk about how they “tarry with the Lord” and how time in the Word required serious dedication, and honestly, a quiet house I didn’t have.
So when I finally said yes to a deeper walk with God, I tried to follow what I saw. I carved out early mornings and forced myself into long prayer sessions. But ADHD doesn’t respond well to pressure and perfection. I ended up feeling like a failure over and over again.
Then one morning, everything shifted.
A New Way to Connect with God
It was 4 a.m. I tiptoed into my family room and just sat, no fancy prayers. No highlighters. No expectations. I whispered a short prayer, read a couple of scriptures, and wrote a line or two in my journal.
It took 5 minutes.
But here’s the powerful part: I kept doing it. Every day. And those five little minutes started to build something sacred. They became my rhythm. My real rhythm. The one that made space for my brain, my life, my capacity. And guess what? God showed up every time.
It wasn’t about the length of time; it was about the heart behind it.
✨Scriptural Foundation
“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning.”
— Lamentations 3:22–23 NLT
God doesn’t need you to be perfect; He just invites you to come. His mercies are new every single morning, whether you show up with a journal or just a whisper. He’s not tracking the minutes. He’s looking at your heart.
“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night… Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”
— Joshua 1:8 NLT
Yes, the Word encourages consistency. But consistency doesn’t mean rigidity. You don’t have to do it the same way every day. You just have to stay connected.
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”
— Psalm 119:105 NLT
God’s Word gives direction, even in small doses. A single verse can bring clarity, comfort, and courage.
💡 Let’s Reset the Routine
If you’ve ever said, “I want to be close to God, but I can’t keep a routine,” I want to offer you this truth:
You can have a consistent relationship with God without being inflexible.
In fact, building your walk with God your way may be the most beautiful act of obedience yet.
Here are some ADHD-friendly ways to build a flexible spiritual rhythm:
🌿 Practical Tools and Takeaways
- Start with 5-Minute Bursts of Faith
Don’t underestimate the power of 5 minutes. Whether it’s reading a Psalm, whispering a prayer while brushing your teeth, or journaling a quick gratitude list, those minutes matter. They build muscle over time. - Create “Anchor Moments” Not Strict Schedules
Instead of saying “I have to pray at 6 a.m.,” try:
📌 “I pray before I check my phone.”
📌 “I read scripture while my coffee brews.”
📌 “I listen to a worship song while folding laundry.”
These are cues, not constraints.
- Let Your Tools Serve You (Not Overwhelm You)
Use devotionals, apps, alarms, sticky notes, and playlists—just don’t let them boss you around. They’re meant to support your focus, not become another to-do list. - Choose Grace Over Guilt
Some days will look messy. You’ll forget, get distracted, or just feel “off.” Grace says, “Try again tomorrow.” Shame says, “You’ll never get it right.” Choose grace. - Track Connection, Not Completion
It’s okay if your quiet time looks different every day. What matters is that you show up, even if it’s in different ways. Some days it’s worship. Some days it’s journaling. Some days it’s just being still.
🧡 Sis, You’re Not Failing
You’re not undisciplined. You’re not unspiritual. You’re not broken.
You’re learning to walk with God in a way that honors how He created you.
And that is more than enough.
Let your relationship with Him be anchored in love, not performance. And when you feel scattered, remember that even five focused minutes with God can center your soul and reset your day.
You don’t have to change who you are to get close to God. He’ll meet you right where you are.
