Relationship Reset – Post 5
If you’ve ever sat in a quiet room with your Bible open, determined to connect with God, only to find your mind wandering 43 seconds in…you’re not alone.
Traditional worship and study methods are beautiful, but if they don’t always “click” with your ADHD brain, that doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means you’re wired differently, and beautifully. God isn’t limited to pews, podcasts, or paper pages. He’s creative, and He delights in connecting with you in ways that match how He designed you.
Worship Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All (Psalm 100:2)
“Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy.” – Psalm 100:2 (NLT)
Worship isn’t just a slow song on Sunday. It’s an invitation into joy, creativity, and connection. If sitting still and quietly reading scripture doesn’t always fill your spiritual cup, you’re allowed to explore new expressions of worship that align with how your brain and spirit flow.
I love that my ADHD brain craves creativity. I need to move, feel, and experience in order to focus. For me, worship might look like dancing in my living room, journaling with watercolor pens, or walking through nature with worship music in my ears. That is worship.
God isn’t grading you on performance; He’s inviting you into His presence.
Pray Without Ceasing—Your Way (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
“Never stop praying.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT)
ADHD and quiet-time guilt go hand-in-hand far too often. But prayer doesn’t have to be a formal sit-down session. It can be whispered thoughts while folding laundry, a mental check-in while driving, or even a full-on conversation while painting or cooking.
Instead of feeling like you “never finish your prayers,” try weaving prayer into your day like thread. Let it run through every task — messy, beautiful, and real. Your prayer life doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be powerful.
Hearing God Outside the Box (John 14:23)
“All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.” – John 14:23 (NLT)
Yes, God speaks through His Word. But He also speaks through art, nature, songs, dreams, conversations, and stillness. If distractions keep pulling you away from traditional Bible study, maybe it’s time to let God meet you in the spaces where you’re already paying attention.
Try asking Him to speak during your daily walk, your next painting session, or while you journal. Then listen. He’ll meet you there.
Creative Ways to Worship and Connect with God
Here are a few ADHD-friendly ways to worship, pray, and hear from God when traditional methods feel out of reach:
-
Worship Through Music – Create a playlist that speaks to your soul and worship while you clean, drive, or dance it out.
Worship Through Art – Doodle scripture, paint a prayer or use colors and textures to express your heart to God.
Creative Journaling – Use stickers, highlighters, or voice notes instead of pen and paper. Let your journaling match your vibe.
Nature Walks with God – Take your prayer time outside. Let creation stir your spirit and clear your mind.
Worship with Movement – Dance, stretch, or even clean as an act of worship. Turn ordinary movement into a sacred offering.
Talk It Out – Speak your prayers or record them in voice memos. Who says prayer has to be silent?
ADHD Doesn’t Disqualify You from Deep Worship
You were never meant to force your relationship with God into someone else’s mold. Worship is deeply personal. And God, your Creator, knows how you’re wired. He knows your brain needs movement, variety, and creativity. And guess what? He loves that about you.
Don’t let guilt or comparison stop you from connecting with Him in the ways that actually work for you.
Let’s Reset the Relationship
So maybe you don’t connect through traditional worship or Bible study, and that’s okay. Let’s get curious instead of critical. What stirs your heart? What grabs your attention? Start there.
Let worship be joyful, not forced. Let prayer be real, not rigid. Let your relationship with God be filled with creativity, presence, and peace, even when your mind wanders.
