Relationship Reset – Post 9
Comparison is a thief. It sneaks in quietly and steals your joy, your peace, and even the intimacy of your walk with God. If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling through social media and thinking, “She prays more than I do,” or “Her faith seems so much stronger than mine,” you’re not alone. As women with ADHD, comparison can feel especially loud and heavy. We already battle distraction, inconsistency, and guilt, so when we start measuring our spiritual life against someone else’s, it can leave us feeling like we’re always falling short.
But here’s the truth: your relationship with God was never meant to look like anyone else’s.
What Scripture Says About Comparison
The Apostle Paul reminds us in Galatians 6:4-5 (NLT):
“Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.”
God isn’t asking you to copy someone else’s spiritual routine. He isn’t grading your prayer life against your friend’s, or your Bible study habits against that woman at church who seems to have it all together. He’s looking at you and your effort, your heart, your unique journey with Him.
In fact, when Samuel was tempted to make assumptions about who God had chosen to be king, the Lord corrected him:
1 Samuel 16:7 (NLT):
“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’”
God isn’t impressed with appearances. He sees the intentions, the struggles, the whispers of prayer you lift up in between appointments or during your morning commute. What might look “messy” to you could be precious to Him.
And in Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT), we’re reminded that His ways are higher than ours:
“‘My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,’ says the Lord. ‘And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.’”
God is not limited by your ADHD brain, your inconsistent schedule, or your forgetful moments. He is writing a unique story in you, one that doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.
Why Your Relationship Will Look Different
If you live with ADHD, your faith journey may feel unpredictable at times. Maybe you pray better while walking than sitting still. Maybe you connect with God through journaling one day, and music the next. Maybe your quiet time doesn’t happen at 5am, it happens in the carpool line or while folding laundry.
That’s not wrong. That’s real.
Your relationship with God isn’t about fitting into someone else’s mold. It’s about finding what helps you connect with Him in the season you’re in, with the wiring He gave you.
Practical Ways to Embrace Your Unique Walk with God
- Pay attention to what works for you. If journaling helps you focus, lean into it. If prayer walks clear your mind, do that.
- Release comparison triggers. If social media or certain conversations stir up guilt, give yourself permission to step back.
- Celebrate small wins. Read one verse? Whispered one prayer? That counts. God delights in every intentional step.
- Remember your heart matters most. God isn’t keeping score; He’s after your love and attention, however imperfect it may look.
A Final Word of Encouragement
Sis, your relationship with God will look different, and that’s okay. Different doesn’t mean less than. Different doesn’t mean broken. It means personal. It means God knows you so deeply that He crafted a walk with Him that fits you.
As we close out the Relationship Reset series, I pray you’ve been reminded that God isn’t after perfection, He’s after connection. Every small prayer, every attempt to open your Bible, every moment you turn your heart toward Him is beautiful in His eyes.
This isn’t the end, it’s the beginning. You’ve got everything you need to keep growing with God at your pace, in your way, with His grace.
💛 Keep showing up, keep leaning in, and keep remembering, you are never behind with God.
