It’s 2025 – a new year, a fresh start. As we step into this new season, let’s begin with a commitment to something life-changing: consistent prayer. For Christian women with ADHD, I know the struggle all too well. Being consistent, focused, and fully present in prayer can feel like a challenge we’ll never conquer. Let’s face it – the struggle is real.
But what if I told you that you can build a prayer habit that sticks, even with distractions, busyness, and moments of low motivation? It’s not only possible—it’s achievable. I know because I’ve done it. For over 15 years, I’ve been consistent in prayer, and today, I want to share how you can do it too.
Let’s start by taking a deep breath. One of the most freeing truths is this: God doesn’t expect perfection. He isn’t waiting for you to pray with flawless focus or poetic words. He simply wants you to show up. If you have the desire to grow closer to Him, you already have the seed. Let’s water it together.
Why Consistency in Prayer Matters
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT) encourages us to “Never stop praying.” This doesn’t mean being on your knees 24/7; it means keeping the lines of communication open with God throughout your day. Think of it like a close friendship—regular, heartfelt conversations deepen the relationship.
In Daniel 6:10 (NLT), we see a beautiful example of prayer consistency. Even in the face of danger, Daniel maintained his habit of praying three times a day, as he always had. He made time for God, no matter what. This kind of commitment inspires us to prioritize prayer, even when life feels overwhelming.
Overcoming ADHD Prayer Challenges
If you’re living with ADHD, maintaining consistency in prayer can feel like an uphill battle. Here’s the good news: you don’t have to fight this alone. Let’s address some common challenges:
- Distractions: Your mind wanders mid-prayer.
- Busyness: Your schedule feels too packed for dedicated time with God.
- Lack of Motivation: Some days, prayer just doesn’t feel “productive” enough.
I get it because I’ve been there. But let’s reframe these struggles as opportunities to lean on God’s grace and discover strategies that work.
Strategies to Build a Prayer Habit That Sticks
Here are practical steps to help you establish a consistent prayer routine:
- Start Small
Begin with just 5–10 minutes a day. You don’t have to pray for hours to make it meaningful. Even short, intentional prayers can draw you closer to God. - Set a Daily Reminder
Consistency thrives on routine. Choose a specific time each day for prayer. For me, it’s at midnight—a quiet time while everyone in the house is either sleeping or whining down (I have a house full of night owls). Find what works for you and stick to it. - Create a Dedicated Prayer Space
Find a quiet spot where you can focus. Having a designated space can minimize distractions, whether it’s a cozy corner in your home or a specific chair. - Use Prayer Prompts
Keep a prayer journal or a list of topics to pray about. This can help guide your prayers and keep you focused. Scripture-based prompts are especially powerful. - Be Kind to Yourself
Missed a day? That’s okay. God isn’t keeping score. Just pick up where you left off and keep going.
