Guarding Your Heart Against Distractions / Heart Song, Personal Growth, Spiritual Growth / By Coach Kenya Joy Do you often feel like you’re swimming against the tide of everyday life, constantly overwhelmed and distracted? You’re not alone. This is a common experience for women who deal with ADHD. The constant rush of thoughts, coming in and out at warp speed throughout the day, can easily lead to overthinking and feeling overwhelmed. It’s a part of life, but it doesn’t have to define your life. How do you control the overwhelm and minimize distractions? I’m glad you asked! One powerful strategy is to guard your heart. You might be wondering, what does this have to do with being overwhelmed and distracted? Well, whatever you allow into your heart will shape your thoughts and actions. Negative emotions like frustration, fear, anxiety, hate, anger, and sadness can trigger a cascade of negative thoughts, leading to a day filled with overwhelm and distraction. This is why the Bible advises us to guard our hearts, as it profoundly influences the direction of our lives. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) states, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Guarding your heart means keeping it safe from harm or danger – to protect it. How do we protect our hearts? Identify Major Sources of Distraction To guard your heart, you need to discover the source of your distractions. These sources can be internal, such as your thoughts and emotions; external, such as noise or visual clutter; or societal, such as societal expectations or pressures. Understanding these different types of distractions can help you develop strategies to manage them. Internal Distractions: Internal distractions often stem from our thoughts and emotions. If your heart is full of worry, it’s easy to become consumed by anxious thoughts. Similarly, feelings of anger can cloud your mind, making it difficult to focus on what truly matters. External Distractions: External distractions are everywhere. Whether it’s the constant ping of notifications on your phone or the visual clutter in your living space, these external factors can distract your attention from what’s important. Societal Distractions: Societal expectations and pressures can also be significant sources of distraction. The pressure to meet certain standards or to conform to societal norms can weigh heavily on your heart, leading to feelings of inadequacy and distraction. Create a Daily Routine That Includes Time for Prayer and Meditation on God’s Word Creating a routine can help you manage ADHD symptoms and improve your overall functioning. Developing a daily prayer routine and meditating on God’s Word will provide you with a sense of peace and calm, enhance focus and mindfulness, strengthen spiritual resilience, and foster positive thinking. Benefits of a Daily Routine Sense of Peace and Calm: Starting and ending your day with prayer and meditation helps center your thoughts and feelings, bringing a sense of peace. Enhanced Focus and Mindfulness: Regular meditation on Scripture helps train your mind to stay focused and present. Strengthened Spiritual Resilience: Consistent prayer builds a deeper connection with God, providing strength and guidance. Positive Thinking: Meditating on God’s promises and truths helps fill your heart with positive and uplifting thoughts, counteracting negativity. Seek Accountability and Support from a Trusted Friend or Coach Accountability and support from a trusted friend or coach will provide emotional support, promote spiritual growth, and create a supportive environment. Here’s how: Emotional Support: Having someone to talk to about your struggles can help lighten your emotional load. They can offer empathy, understanding, and encouragement when needed. Spiritual Growth: A trusted friend or coach can help you grow spiritually by encouraging consistency in prayer and meditation practices. They can also provide insights and perspectives that deepen your understanding of God’s Word. Supportive Environment: Creating a supportive environment involves surrounding yourself with people who understand your challenges and are committed to helping you succeed. This network of support can help you stay focused and avoid distractions. Guarding your heart is essential in navigating the distractions of everyday life, especially when dealing with ADHD. By identifying major sources of distraction, creating a daily routine that includes time for prayer and meditation on God’s Word, and seeking accountability and support, you can protect your heart and maintain a positive direction for your life.
