How Journaling Helped Me Stay Consistent in Prayer with ADHD

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone—because that was me, too.

Over 15 years ago, before I knew I had ADHD, I struggled to maintain focus in prayer. I thought it was just another flaw. I’d watch my Christian sisters pray so intently, so eloquently, and wonder why my thoughts were constantly wandering. Why couldn’t I just stay focused? Then came a turning point.

I had been working hard to build a consistent prayer life, and one morning I woke up terribly sick. I had the flu—sore throat, fever, body aches—the works. I couldn’t speak aloud without pain, but I was determined not to skip my prayer time. So, I grabbed my journal and began to write my prayer instead.

To my surprise, my thoughts flowed effortlessly. I stayed focused. I didn’t drift off. Writing grounded me in a way I had never experienced in prayer before.

That one sick morning turned into a life-changing habit. Today, I’ve completed 38 prayer journals—and I’m currently working on number 39. Journaling didn’t just help me stay focused; it became a vital part of my walk with God.

Why Journaling Works for ADHD Brains

As a Christian woman with ADHD, I’ve learned to embrace how my brain works—and journaling has been one of the most effective tools to help me stay grounded in prayer.

Habakkuk 2:2 (NLT) says, “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others.’”

There’s power in writing things down—especially when you’re easily distracted. Here’s how journaling helped me and how it can help you, too:

  1. Guided Prompts Keep the Mind Anchored
Using simple prompts like “God, today I’m thankful for…” or “Lord, help me with…” gives your prayers structure. It’s like giving your thoughts a path to walk on instead of letting them roam freely.
  2. Captures Thoughts Before They Drift
Let’s be real: distractions happen. A to-do list item will pop into your head mid-prayer. Instead of fighting it, write it down in the corner of your journal. Acknowledge it, release it, and return to your conversation with God.
  3. Tracks God’s Faithfulness Over Time
There’s nothing like flipping back through old journal entries and seeing how God answered your prayers—sometimes in ways you didn’t expect. It builds faith and reminds you that He’s always listening.
  4. Acts as a Conversation with God
Writing your prayers can feel like writing a heartfelt letter. It removes the pressure of sounding right and makes space for being real. On days when your thoughts feel all over the place, this written dialogue can bring calm and clarity.
  5. Makes Prayer More Tangible and Intentional
You’re not just journaling words—you’re journaling your walk with God. From scripture reflections and praises to prayer requests and Holy Spirit nudges, it becomes a sacred rhythm that strengthens your focus and deepens your faith.

Psalm 102:18 (NLT) says, “Let this be recorded for future generations, so that a people not yet born will praise the Lord.”

Every journal becomes a legacy. One day, your children—and their children—may look back and see your journey with God through your words. What a beautiful testimony.

As a life coach, I often encourage my clients to journal. Why? Because it’s not just for prayer—it’s a powerful tool for personal growth and faith-based transformation.
