In our faith walk, especially if you have ADHD, the idea of perfectionism often looms large. We feel the pressure to be flawless in our spiritual journey, but here’s a truth we must embrace: NO ONE IS PERFECT! If you’re relentlessly striving for perfection, it’s time to prepare for the inevitable: failure. Yes, we should aspire to live according to the word of God, but it’s crucial to recognize that this is a lifelong process. While we continue to work on ourselves, it’s essential to understand that it does get easier over time. Why? Because God doesn’t expect us to be perfect. If that were the case, we wouldn’t need Him.
The Unattainable Quest for Perfection:
In our faith walk, there’s often an unspoken expectation that we must attain perfection. We wrestle with the feeling that we should have it all together, that every step should be faultless. However, this pursuit of perfection can be exhausting and discouraging, leading us down a path of inevitable failure.
The Liberating Truth:
The liberating truth we must remember is that no one, absolutely no one, is perfect. Our faith journey is not a sprint; it’s a marathon, a continuous process of growth and refinement. While we should strive to align our lives with God’s word, we should also understand that we are imperfect beings.
God’s Perspective:
God’s perspective on our imperfection is one of love and grace. He doesn’t demand perfection from us. In fact, it’s our recognition of our imperfections that opens the door to His boundless love and forgiveness. Our need for Him is precisely what strengthens our faith.
Embracing the Journey:
Rather than striving for unattainable perfection, we should embrace the journey of faith. It’s okay to make mistakes and stumble along the way. What’s important is that we keep moving forward, seeking to grow and improve. Over time, the process becomes more manageable, and we find solace in God’s unwavering love and support.
Overcoming the Spirit of Perfectionism:
- Prayer and Surrender: Begin by surrendering your desire for perfection to God. Acknowledge that you are imperfect, and that’s okay. In 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NLT), God’s grace is sufficient for us in our weaknesses.
- Focus on Progress, Not Perfection: Shift your mindset from an all-or-nothing approach to one that values growth and progress. Philippians 1:6 (NLT) reminds us that God is continually at work in us.
- Community and Accountability: Share your struggles with trusted fellow believers who can offer support, encouragement, and accountability. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NLT) highlights the strength in unity.
In our faith walk, the notion of perfectionism can be a heavy burden to bear. However, it’s vital to recognize that perfection is an elusive ideal. NO ONE is perfect, and that’s okay. Our faith journey is a process, a lifelong endeavor to become better and draw closer to God. He doesn’t expect us to be perfect because He knows that our imperfections are what connect us to Him. So, release the pressure to be perfect, embrace the journey, and remember that it’s through our weaknesses that God’s strength shines the brightest.
