Inviting God to Search Your Heart 1 Comment / Heart Song, Personal Growth, Spiritual Growth / By Coach Kenya Joy Welcome back to the “Heart Song” series! In our last post, we explored how the heart can be deceptive, leading to self-deception and negative self-talk. This week, we dive deeper to examine the motives and desires of our hearts. We’ve established that what’s in our hearts determines our actions, but knowing the true motives behind those actions can be a powerful revelation. The main question you need to consider is: What song does your heart sing? Our hearts are like musical instruments, and the emotions, desires, and motives within us play a melody that influences every aspect of our lives. If our hearts are full of anger, that anger will shape our actions and interactions. But if our hearts are full of love, joy, and peace, our actions will reflect those qualities instead. Inviting God to Examine Your Motives By inviting God to search our hearts, we ask Him to examine our true motives. Psalms 139:23 (NLT) says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” This verse is an effective prayer for anyone who is feeling lost and unsure about their genuine intentions and objectives. It is a request for divine wisdom and guidance. Understanding Motives A motive is something that causes a person to act in a certain way or do a certain thing. It’s the goal or object of a person’s actions. By understanding our motives, we can better understand the reasoning behind our actions. Are our actions driven by selfish desires, fear, or pride? Or are they motivated by love, kindness, and a desire to serve others? Keeping Our Motives Pure To ensure that our actions align with the Word of God, we need to keep our motives pure. Our witness as believers can be seen in our actions and how we treat others. Pure motives reflect a heart aligned with God’s will, and they guide us to act in ways that honor Him. Solutions for Aligning Your Heart with God’s Will Regularly Pray Psalms 139:23 Establish a routine of praying Psalms 139:23, asking God to show you the genuine condition of your heart. By doing this, you can maintain your relationship with God and persistently ask for His direction in your life. Spend Quiet Time in Self-Reflection Schedule time for silent self-reflection. In these moments, listen for God’s voice and follow His lead. Reflect on your acts and the motivations behind them. This practice might help you get clarity and insight into areas where you need to ask forgiveness or make changes. Engage in Spiritual Practices Spiritual practices like fasting or retreats can provide deeper insight into your heart’s condition. These practices help you draw closer to God and gain a better understanding of His will for your life. They create space for God to speak to you and reveal hidden motives that need to be addressed. Inviting God to search your heart is a significant step toward better understanding your actual reasons and desires. Consistently praying Psalms 139:23, spending alone time in self-reflection, and engaging in spiritual activities will help you align your heart with God’s plan and ensure that your actions reflect His love and truth. Remember that whatever song your heart sings is a strong message to people around you. Let it be a song of love, peace, and purity, mirroring the heart of God in everything you do. Let’s Chat!
