As a Christian woman with ADHD, I know all too well the feeling of running out of time in a day. Between work, family, errands, and everything else on the never-ending to-do list, finding even a moment to pause and pray can seem impossible. Let’s be honest—how often do we promise ourselves we’ll pray later, only to fall into bed exhausted and realize we forgot? The guilt can feel heavy. But here’s the truth: prayer doesn’t have to be perfect or long to be powerful. It just needs to be sincere.
Last week, we talked about extending grace to ourselves in our prayer lives. This week, we’ll dive into practical ways to find time for prayer, even on the busiest of days, because, just like any relationship, our relationship with God grows through communication. Psalms 55:17 (NLT) reminds us, “Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the Lord hears my voice.” God is always listening, and He’s ready to meet us wherever we are—even in the chaos of a busy schedule.
The Challenge of Finding Time to Pray
For many of us, the struggle is real. We want to spend quality time in prayer, but life feels too fast-paced. Between the demands of work, family, and personal responsibilities, the thought of carving out dedicated prayer time can feel overwhelming. But the good news is that prayer doesn’t have to be confined to a specific time or place. It can happen in the margins of our day, woven into the fabric of our routines.
Ephesians 6:18 (NLT) encourages us to “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” This verse reminds us that prayer is not limited to mornings or evenings. It’s a continuous conversation with God that can happen anytime, anywhere.
Solutions for Busy Days
Here are some practical ways to make prayer a natural part of your day:
1. Pray in Short Moments
When you don’t have a perfectly quiet room to connect with God. Use those in-between moments to pray:
- While commuting to work or running errands.
- During meal prep or while waiting for your coffee to brew.
- On short breaks at work or while folding laundry.
A simple prayer like, “Lord, thank You for this moment. Help me to honor You today,” can be enough to center your heart.
- Integrate Prayer Into Daily Activities
Turn everyday tasks into opportunities for connection with God:
- Practice breath prayers by pairing a simple phrase with your breathing. For example, inhale and think, “Lord, have mercy,” then exhale and think, “Christ, give me peace.”
- Meditate on a favorite scripture as you walk on the treadmill or take a shower.
- Speak to God while washing dishes, saying, “Lord, as I clean these plates, clean my heart and renew my spirit.”
3. Keep a Prayer Journal or App
I’ve been on a consistent prayer journey for 15 years and have completed 37 journals in that time. Keeping a prayer journal has been one of the best tools for staying focused during prayer. Writing down my thoughts, prayers, and reflections has not only helped me stay consistent but also allowed me to look back and see how God has moved in my life.
If you prefer digital tools, consider using a prayer app to jot down quick prayers or set reminders to pray throughout the day. Even a sticky note with a prayer list on your desk can serve as a gentle nudge.
Give Yourself Grace
Building a consistent prayer life takes time and patience. Some days you might only have five minutes, and that’s okay. What matters is your heart and your intention to connect with God. Remember, He’s not looking for perfection—He’s looking for you.
