Faith and Focus: ADHD, Holy Spirit, and Me – Post 6
Have you ever had a moment that changed everything? A moment so small on the outside, but so life-shifting on the inside that you knew nothing would ever be the same? For me, that moment came over 15 years ago, at 4 am, with a simple prayer. It wasn’t polished, it wasn’t long, and it wasn’t perfect, but it marked the beginning of a new way of showing up with God one small step at a time.
The Struggle Before the Breakthrough
Before that prayer, I spent years wrestling with guilt. I thought a “real” prayer life had to look like long hours, perfectly focused thoughts, and carefully chosen words. But that never matched my reality. My mind wandered without effort, distractions showed up uninvited, and instead of feeling close to God, I often felt like I was failing Him. I didn’t have the language for ADHD back then, but I knew something in me made consistency feel almost impossible.
The Morning that Changed Everything
I’ll never forget that morning. The house was quiet, the world still asleep, and I sat there with nothing more than a tired heart and a simple prayer…no fancy words, no grand expectations…just me and God at 4 am. What I didn’t realize in that moment was how one small act of showing up would grow into a rhythm of consistency that changed my life. That morning marked the beginning of a breakthrough, not because I got everything right, but because I chose to show up anyway.
What I Learned Through Consistency
As I kept showing up each morning, I began to notice some powerful truths:
-
- God was never asking me for perfection. If He were, I would have been disqualified from the start.
- He honored my effort, whether it was five minutes or an hour.
- My honesty mattered more than “right” words. God wanted my heart, not my performance.
- Consistency made prayer easier. Over time, those five minutes stretched naturally into longer conversations with Him.
These lessons reshaped the way I saw prayer. It was no longer about doing it “the right way,” it was about showing up and letting God meet me where I was.
Learning to Pray with ADHD
Did I still get distracted during prayer? Absolutely. My thoughts would wander, my to-do list would show up uninvited, and sometimes I felt like I was starting over every five minutes. But instead of letting it defeat me, I found a few ways to work with my brain. I kept a small notebook beside me to jot down stray thoughts so I could return to prayer without guilt. I also gave myself permission to start small…five minutes really was enough. These small adjustments didn’t eliminate the distractions, but they helped me stay focused on God in the moment.
A Scripture That Came Alive
Looking back now, I see how Psalm 5:3 was coming alive in my life during that season: “Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.” That verse describes exactly what was happening in my 4 am moments. I didn’t have long, eloquent prayers, but I showed up every morning, bringing what I could and trusting God to meet me there. And He did faithfully, tenderly, every single time.
Be Encouraged
I want to encourage you: don’t underestimate the power of small beginnings. If five minutes is all you can give, give it. If distractions creep in, find simple strategies that work for you. What matters most is not how perfect your prayer looks, but that you come with a willing heart. Consistency will grow over time, and God will honor your effort just as He did mine. He isn’t asking you to be flawless. He’s asking you to be faithful.
Let’s Pray
Lord, thank You for reminding us that You value obedience over perfection. Teach us to show up with honest hearts, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Help us to trust that You meet us in the small, quiet moments and that You honor our consistency. Give us grace when distractions come, and strengthen us to keep showing up, one step at a time. Amen.
