Faith & Focus: ADHD, Holy Spirit, and Me – Post 10
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that ADHD looks different for everyone. What works for one person might not work for another, especially when it comes to faith. Finding your rhythm with God can feel messy, unpredictable, and, at times, discouraging. Was it easy for me? Not at all.
In the beginning, I tried to mirror what I saw in others’ early-morning prayers, perfectly structured devotion time, the kind of routines that looked “holy” on the outside. They worked for a while, but the success was short-lived. Deep down, I was striving for someone else’s rhythm instead of partnering with the Holy Spirit to find my own.
Looking back, I realize God was preparing me long before I was diagnosed with ADHD. He gently led me into a rhythm that matched how He designed me, one anchored not in perfection, but in His presence.
My Journey – Before and After Diagnosis
My journey with God began long before I ever knew I had ADHD. Back in October 2009, the Father began tugging at my heart in a way I couldn’t ignore. I felt Him calling me closer, inviting me to know Him intimately. I had every excuse: “I can’t stay consistent,” “I’ll lose focus,” “I’ll forget tomorrow.” But the Holy Spirit met me right there in my uncertainty and began teaching me how to overcome the very challenges I didn’t yet understand.
It started one quiet morning in November. I made a simple commitment to pray every single day. At 4 a.m., I would get up, go into my family room, and sit on the couch. My prayers were short, often just a few words and a scripture written in my journal. At first, it didn’t feel very spiritual. Honestly, I felt defeated. But I showed up again the next day. And the next.
Somewhere in that quiet space of showing up, I began to sense His presence more deeply. I never asked for anything other than to be with Him. My prayers became less about what I wanted and more about what He wanted to do in me. Over time, He began changing my heart, my focus, and even the way I saw myself.
When I was later diagnosed with ADHD, it suddenly made sense why I struggled to stay focused, why guilt had such a strong hold on me. But what amazed me most was realizing that God had already prepared me. The rhythm He’d helped me build before my diagnosis became the foundation that sustained me afterward. The Holy Spirit had taught me how to walk with grace long before I knew I needed it.
Even now, sixteen years later, I still look back in awe. What began with five-minute prayers and early mornings has become a lifestyle not of perfection, but of presence.
Spiritual Realization
That’s the beauty of walking with the Holy Spirit. He knows our pace, our patterns, and our potential. All He asks is that we keep showing up.
“Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” — Galatians 5:25 (NLT)
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness…” — Romans 8:26 (NLT)
These verses remind me that my relationship with God isn’t about perfection, it’s about partnership. The Holy Spirit doesn’t expect flawless focus; He walks with me, teaches me, and helps me when I can’t find my way.
There were times when my prayers were nothing more than a whisper or a few words written in my journal. Yet, I felt His presence there steady, patient, and kind. When my thoughts drifted, He gently called me back. When I had no words, He prayed through me.
That’s what grace looks like in motion: walking in step with the Spirit, trusting His pace, and resting in the assurance that even in weakness, we’re never walking alone.
Faith Rhythm in Action
It’s one thing to know the Holy Spirit walks with you, but it’s another to learn how to walk with Him in daily life. That’s where my rhythm began to take shape, one prayer, one verse, one small moment at a time.
For me, rhythm starts with a set prayer time every day; it’s my non-negotiable moment with God. I began at 4 a.m., then shifted to 5 a.m., and today, I meet with Him at 12 a.m. That time is sacred, my daily appointment with the Father. During that quiet hour, I journal, worship, and reflect on scripture. Some days I pray long, other days it’s brief, but every prayer draws me closer.
The rest of my day flows from that foundation. I pray short, grace-filled prayers throughout the day. I worship while cooking or cleaning. I journal when my mind feels full, and I pause on one verse when focus is hard. Those small moments keep me connected, reminders that the same Spirit who meets me at midnight also walks with me through the day.
The Holy Spirit has shown me that my rhythm doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It’s not about how perfectly I pray, it’s about being present and willing. Each time I show up, He meets me, and that’s what keeps the rhythm alive.
Be Encouraged
This rhythm isn’t perfect, but it’s mine, shaped by grace, guided by the Holy Spirit, and sustained by God’s love. And if He did it for me, He can help you find your rhythm too.
Maybe you’ve tried before, started strong, lost focus, and felt the sting of guilt. I’ve been there. But the beauty of God’s grace is that you can start again, anytime. Your rhythm doesn’t have to look like mine. It doesn’t have to start at midnight or 5 a.m. It just has to start with a willing heart.
Invite the Holy Spirit into your process. Let Him lead you to the time, space, and way that helps you stay connected. He’s not asking for perfection, just partnership. And over time, you’ll see what I’ve seen: that showing up with your whole heart, even for a few moments, can change everything.
💛 My prayer for you: May you walk in step with the Spirit, find rest in His presence, and discover that the most powerful rhythm of all is the one built on love, not pressure.
