Becoming Her: Rooted, Restored & Released
For years, I believed the greatest battle was over my destiny. I thought if I could just heal enough, grow enough, or overcome enough, I would finally become the woman God had called me to be. Then the Holy Spirit showed me something that changed the way I saw myself.
Years ago, I preached a message titled “Your Past Does Not Determine Your Destiny.” Looking back, I realized the deeper issue was never my destiny. It was my identity. The greatest struggle wasn’t whether God had a purpose for my life. It was whether I believed who He said I already was.
Many of us spend years introducing ourselves by our past while God keeps calling us according to our becoming.
Stop Defining Yourself by Your Past
It is easy to build an identity around what you have lived through.
Without realizing it, we begin measuring our worth by our mistakes, disappointments, rejection, trauma, or the words others have spoken over us. Those experiences become the lens through which we view ourselves.
I know this because I lived it.
For years, I measured my value through everything that had gone wrong. Every setback seemed to confirm the story I already believed about myself. Even as I grew in my faith, there were still places where I quietly agreed with labels God had never spoken over my life.
The Holy Spirit began showing me that I was carrying labels He never gave me. I was allowing yesterday to introduce me to today, while God was inviting me into something entirely different.
God is Calling You Toward Your Becoming
Throughout Scripture, God often called people according to who He created them to become, not according to how they saw themselves.
Gideon was one of those people.
When God found Gideon, he was hiding from the Midianites, overwhelmed by fear and convinced he had little to offer. His circumstances spoke one story, but God spoke another.
“The Lord turned to him and said, ‘Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!'” Judges 6:14 (NLT)
God was not waiting for Gideon to become fearless before giving him purpose. He called him while Gideon was still wrestling with how he saw himself. Gideon’s perspective was shaped by his limitations. God’s perspective was rooted in His calling.
God speaks to the purpose He placed in you. He is not looking at your past to determine your future. He calls forward who He created.
The Enemy Speaks Labels. God Speaks Identity.
The enemy has always tried to distort identity.
From the very beginning, his strategy has been to convince God’s people to believe something different from what God has spoken. He understands that if he can influence how you see yourself, he can influence how you live.
That is why he continues whispering labels rooted in your past.
Failure.
Rejected.
Unworthy.
Too broken.
Not enough.
God never speaks to you that way.
He speaks to who He created.
He speaks to what He placed within you.
He calls forth who He created.
The question is not whose voice is speaking.
The question is whose voice you have chosen to believe.
Becoming Her in Motion
Take a moment to consider the labels you have been carrying.
Ask yourself, Did God speak this over my life?
If the answer is no, you no longer have to come into agreement with it.
Release the labels rooted in your past and embrace the identity God has spoken over you. Every step of obedience is a step away from who the enemy tried to convince you that you were and a step toward the woman God created you to be.
You do not have to spend another day agreeing with a version of yourself God never spoke. He calls forth who He created.
Let’s Pray…
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me enough to see beyond my past and call forth who You created me to be. Forgive me for every place where I have agreed with labels You never spoke over my life. Today, I choose to come into agreement with Your truth instead of my fears, my failures, or my past experiences.
Help me to recognize Your voice above every other voice. Heal the places where hurt, disappointment, and shame have shaped the way I see myself. Root my identity in who You say I am, and give me the courage to walk confidently in the purpose You have placed within me.
Thank You for continuing to call me forward each day. I trust that You are completing the work You began in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
